Help All Children Reach Their Potential
The Pitt-Greensburg program offers two unique pathways to become a teacher of Special Education. A Major in Special Education will prepare teacher candidates to become certified in Special Education who are eligible to teach Special Education from Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (age 22).
Every child can learn but not always in the same way or in the same time frame. You could be that teacher who helps all children reach their potential, regardless of their challenges!
Special education teachers need to be able to reach students at every level of the social, emotional, and cognitive spectrums. At Pitt-Greensburg, you will take courses focused on how to best help students learn. You will learn effective instructional methods for your varied students. You will begin work in the classroom your second semester of freshman year. You will complete at least 175 hours in the field prior to student teaching, giving you experience and knowledge for your own future classroom.
A Dual Major in Early Childhood Education and Special Education will prepare teacher candidates to become certified in Early Childhood Education who are eligible to teach Pre-kindergarten through 4th grade and Special Education classrooms from Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (age 22).
A Dual Major in Special Education and Psychology allows people interested in school psychology to gain greater depth of knowledge as well as certification in Special Education. This option is especially geared towards people interested in school psychology.
