- Each year, outstanding writers in our program receive awards in their chosen genres. Our awards include:
- The Ida B. Wells Prize for Excellence in Journalism
- The Joan Didion Prize for Excellence in Creative Nonfiction/Digital Storytelling
- The Gerald Stern Prize for Excellence in Poetry
- The Scott Turow Prize for Excellence in Fiction
Career/Internship Information
The Creative & Professional Writing Program offers an internship program that pairs students with local publishing, journalism, and non-profit sites, as well as on-campus opportunities. Students are also encouraged to seek out other internship options. While internships are not required, they are strongly encouraged, particularly for C&PW majors with an emphasis in journalism or nonfiction.
Clubs/Honor Societies/Organizations
The Insider – our student-run/student-edited news source.
Pendulum – our student-edited literary magazine.
Creative Writing Club – a club that brings together student writers from all majors to share their creative work in a supportive workshop space.
Voices: A Reading Series – a monthly reading series that brings together international award-winning authors and Pitt-Greenburg student writers to celebrate diversity in all its forms.
Written/Spoken – A bi-monthly reading series that provides a space for students to read and interact with published authors.
Graduate Studies

Internship/Study Abroad
The rewards of travel and studying abroad are immense, and for writers they can be life-changing. We encourage our students to take advantage of all Study Abroad opportunities and are at work developing Study Abroad options designed specifically for writers. Our faculty work with students who want to pursue Study Abroad opportunities in writing through Independent Studies or guided study.
